Speech by His Majesty the King of the Belgians at the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on consolidating and sustaining peace (New York, Tuesday 24 April 2018).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders currently accompanies the King and Queen of the Belgians on a working visit to the United Nations (UN) in New York. The royal couple and the minister will take part in a ceremony of commemoration of the First World War later today. Following this homage, they will inaugurate an exhibition of photographs dedicated to those who, coming from the four corners of the world, came to fight on the European soil.

Belgium will allocate this year 26 million EUR for humanitarian help to Syria and neighboring countries. This sum will go to the war refugees. The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo at the start of the international conference Supporting Syria and the Region which takes place today and tomorrow in Brussels.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo asked the World Bank to focus more on the inclusion of women in the financial system. He was speaking at a debate attended by World Bank President Jim Kim and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. Minister De Croo takes part until Sunday at the yearly Spring Meetings of the World Bank, in Washington DC.

Belgium will financially support the World Food Programme’s roll-out of blockchain technology for cash-based transfers in refugee camps. Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for Development Cooperation and Digital Agenda Alexander De Croo announced the collaboration during a working visit to the United Nations in New York. Belgium is investing twenty million euros in total this year in innovation to improve humanitarian assistance.

Belgium strongly condemns all use of chemical weapons which are a blatant violation of international law. Belgium therefore understands the military action in Syria of our American, French and British partners who have targeted identified production facilities.

Belgium will raise its budget for humanitarian aid for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to 25 million euros this year. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation has announced this in Geneva, where a humanitarian donor conference for the DRC is taking place. The humanitarian crisis in the DRC has worsened considerably during the last 2 years.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders takes note of the decision of the Russian authorities to expel a Belgian diplomat from Moscow. This decision was notified this morning to the Belgian Embassy in Russia (Moscow). The Minister regrets this decision from Russia.
